Getting help near Ponteland and Darras Hall
Ponteland feels more rural than most of the places we cover, yet it is only a short drive from the edge of Newcastle. That mix of busy main road, airport traffic and quiet country lanes shapes the kind of breakdowns we see here.
Tyne Road Rescue recovers cars, vans and 4x4s across Ponteland, Darras Hall and the surrounding villages. We are available 24 hours a day, every day, for everything from a flat battery on a frosty driveway to a full tow after an accident. You can see the full list on our recovery services page.
The A696, the airport and the A1
The A696 is the main route through the area. It runs from the A1 near Kingston Park past Newcastle International Airport, through Ponteland and on towards Belsay and Otterburn. It carries a lot of airport traffic and some fast rural stretches, so breakdowns can be unnerving.
If you stop on the A696, get as far off the road as you can. A lay-by, a side road or a wide verge is better than a hard stop on the carriageway. Hazard lights on, everyone out on the side away from traffic if safe, and stand well back. If you are blocking a lane and can't move, call 999 first.
Many of our calls in this area come from drivers heading to or from the airport. If you have a flight to catch, tell us straight away. We can't promise to beat the check-in desk, but we can help you plan, and we'll be honest about timing.
Rural lanes and village driveways
Outside the town, the roads narrow quickly. Lanes towards Stamfordham, Milbourne and Kirkley often have no lighting, no pavements and few places to pull in. A car stuck on a bend or soft verge needs careful handling, and occasionally we need to winch it back onto firm ground before loading. Our winch recovery page explains when that is needed.
Closer to home, Darras Hall has long private drives, gravel and gates. If your car won't start at home, let us know about the access so we can bring the right equipment. A jump start or simple fix on the drive is often all that is needed.
Transport to dealers, specialists and auctions
Not every job here is a breakdown. We are often asked to move cars from Ponteland to main dealers, specialist garages, bodyshops and auction sites. Classic cars, cars under repair and vehicles that haven't been driven for months can all be transported on our truck.
If you are sending a car to auction, we can collect it and deliver it to the site you name (no official partnership is implied). For longer trips, see our long-distance vehicle transport page.
Planned moves like these are best booked a little in advance. Tell us the vehicle, its condition, the collection address and the destination, and we'll agree a time that works for both ends. If the car has been stored for a while, mention any flat tyres or sticking brakes so we bring the right kit.
How a call from Ponteland is handled
When you ring, we'll ask where you are, what you're driving, what has gone wrong and where you'd like the vehicle taken. On rural roads, a nearby farm name, junction or a what3words location can save time.
Arrival time depends on location, traffic and current workload; we'll give you an honest estimate when you call. The cost depends on distance, vehicle and the work involved, and we confirm it before we set off. You can also reach us through our contact page. If you're closer to the city, our Gosforth page covers the neighbouring area.
